Meta Tag Generator

Create SE optimized meta tags for your web pages

Tired of using word-count to comply with varying engine character limits for html meta tag title and description tags? This handy meta tags optimization ruler helps you out. Includes free rulers for Alta Vista, Google, HotBot and Lycos.

Wouldn't it be great if there were meta tags optimization standards for web pages that were the same for all search engines? What a concept! Unfortunately, that's not the case. Instead, we must sculpt title and description tags to fit wildly varying limits.

The usual practice goes something like this:

  • Think up the best tag you can for a particular engine.
  • In a word processor, do a word or character count on your tag.
  • If your tag isn't within the limit, try again.
  • Do the word processor thing again.
  • Pull your hair when the tag won't fit.

That's not a pretty picture. Instead, use this html meta tag ruler:

Let's say you're optimizing a title tag suitable for Yahoo!, which has a 40-character limit.

Step 1:
Open a new file in your favorite text editor, such as NotePad or SimpleText. You can also use an html editor in code view. Be certain that word wrap is turned OFF.

Step 2:
Type a ruler in this fashion:

.........1.........2.........3.........4

Step 3:
Now, type your tag material under the ruler, like this:

.........1.........2.........3.........4
This title tag is right for Yahoo!

Step 4:
Copy-paste your tag into place in your html document.

That's all there is to it. Now you can focus on the important stuff - crafting your tag to fit. No more fussing with word processors. No more 3rd party applications. You are in control. Be sure to save your html meta tag ruler as a reusable template. Better yet, copy or download these free html meta tag rulers for Alta Vista, Google, HotBot and Lycos.
